When asked how I have grown personally and how this has helped my communications career since starting the MS in Communication program online at Purdue University, many sharpened abilities came to mind including:
- Sharper research, critical thinking and analytical skills
- Expanded vocabulary
- Improved listening, reading, writing and presentation skills
- Richer insights while utilizing various ‘communication lenses’
- Unleashed creativity
Before starting the program, I possessed these skills, however they are now more refined and continue to grow during my graduate school experience. I'm more apt to express opinions both in personal and work life while providing facts or evidence to support the opinions.
Building Confidence with a Masters in Communication
In general, I feel more confident about my communications knowledge and strategic abilities and as the publishing industry I work in is so competitive, it benefits my employer. With a stronger voice, more intellectual and analytical curiosity, I examine and review cases or scenarios more critically whether it is an issue or crisis on television, social media or in my school work or in my job. For example, it is easier for me to discern between two strategic business proposals and determine the plan matching the goals my company is trying to achieve. I can clearly see that one plan may present issues down the road, while the other one would not. I can speak to this as the brand awareness and strategic communications planning skills I have garnered through the MS in Communication program helps me.
Opening Career Doors with a Graduate Degree in Communication
With all of these tools in my toolbox, I’m growing as a true communications practitioner. I am on the road to becoming a communications specialist and truly looking forward to further personal growth and applying it in all aspects of my life. Accomplishing projects and assignments I never thought I could do or attempted, has had a huge impact on me. It is this confidence and wealth of knowledge that nobody can ever take away from your graduate school experience. This has actually been the greatest growth for me in the program. Without a doubt, being a student in the online MS in Communication through Purdue University has enriched me personally and as a result helped my professional life.
