The role of strategic communication in the nonprofit sector cannot be overstated. While for-profit companies often have large budgets and dedicated staff for advertising, marketing and PR, this is typically not the case in nonprofit organizations (NPOs).

Before embarking on any degree program, it’s important to consider the program’s outcomes and objectives to ensure that they align with your career goals and long-term plan.  After all, the decision to pursue a graduate degree should be made only after careful thought and consideration.  Pursuing a masters degree requires time, commitment, preparation, and dedication, not to mention skills in the areas of time management, interpersonal communication, project planning, teamwork, technology, and self-motivation.

Many students are often surprised to learn how great a role leadership plays in organizational communication efforts.  This reality typically becomes crystal clear in my Crisis Communication course where students analyze various case studies, including the Costa Concordia disaster, the Tylenol crisis, and the Volkswagen emissions scandal.  In each of these crises, the leader’s response either exacerbated the issue or quelled an even greater disaster.

For many students, the prospect of earning a masters degree in Strategic Communication means the possibility of exciting new career opportunities. Whether you are nearing the end of your program, or just starting, it’s smart to begin mapping your job search now.

Technology: friend … or foe?  That seems to be a common question among my agency colleagues.  While technology has certainly boosted efficiency and message reach, it has also created a number of challenges for strategic communication practitioners.

Why did I choose an online program instead of an on-campus learning experience? That’s an easy one. I wanted flexibility. As an Account Executive with a global association management company, I don’t always work a normal schedule. I travel frequently for client events, and I work late to meet deadlines.

I knew from when I was a 16-year-old high school student shadowing for a day a CBS Los Angeles affiliate television reporter for a class “assignment” that there was a big difference between a career and a job.

As an Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator for a manufacturing facility it might seem at first glance that a M.S. in Communication would not be the typical choice for furthering my career.  One would be surprised to find out how even in a nontraditional career path for a Communication Grad student how much the program can help.
