Professor Lowell's scholarship focuses on online distance education, with specific interests in social learning and program development and evaluation. Specific areas of research and practice include, social cognitive learning, situated learning and authentic tasks for online and blended learning, collaborative learning, community of inquiry, scaffolding, student and instructor self-efficacy, and assessment and evaluation..
