Professor Chrystal Johnson teaches Social Studies Education in the Curriculum and Instruction program at Purdue, specifically, Social Studies in the Elementary School and The Teaching of Social Studies In Junior High/Middle School.
Professor Johnson is working with a coalition of researchers situated across North Carolina and Georgia to study:
- The pedagogies, mechanisms and ecologies that foster strong political sophistication among black adolescent males
- If there has been a fundamental shift in how young black males engage in the political process
- How civic educators can capture and sustain young, black, male civic energy
Additionally, she and two of her graduate students are expanding their findings from Project InteGREATe to focus on what happens to early field experiences when social studies is part of statewide tests for academic achievement.
